CKT

Life as a Trainee Solicitor – Elena O’Driscoll

My Journey to CKT:

I had the opportunity to complete a summer internship at CKT before going into the final year of my law degree. I spent 12 weeks with the firm and the experience not only deepened my passion for law but also provided an insight into the operations of a leading Irish firm. The supportive atmosphere left a lasting impression on me, and I knew I wanted to return.

Having completed my degree, I began preparing for the FE1 exams which was both challenging and rewarding. The experience helped me hone crucial skills such as time management, discipline, and perseverance – qualities that have been instrumental in my traineeship.

CKT’s reputation for excellence and its strong emphasis on mentorship made it an ideal place to begin my career. I joined as a trainee in May 2023 and have since been guided by experienced professionals who are genuinely invested in my growth. From day one, I was given opportunities to contribute to complex legal matters, which has been both exciting and enriching.

Outside of work, I have a passion for animals and spend my evenings horse riding. Maintaining a balance between my professional and personal life helps keep me grounded and focused.

Rotations and Legal Opportunities:

CKT’s structured rotation system provides exposure to multiple practice areas. This approach has allowed me to build a well-rounded skill set while also helping me discover where my interests lie.

After completing the PPC course at Blackhall, I was fortunate to spend a period in the Dublin office’s litigation department. I then returned to the Cork office, where I worked in the childcare and family law department, before moving to my current rotation in healthcare. I have particularly enjoyed working on complex medical negligence cases, where I have developed my analytical skills and gained exposure to high-profile matters.

CKT ensures that trainees are given real responsibility, whether conducting legal research, drafting documents, or attending client meetings and court hearings, I have been consistently challenged and supported in equal measure.

The Culture at CKT:

What truly sets CKT apart is its culture. From my first day, I’ve felt welcomed into a team that is inclusive, collaborative and willing to share knowledge. Having approachable experienced colleagues willing to guide and mentor me has had a huge difference on my development.

CKT also values work-life balance, with social events, sports teams like tag rugby, and even a book club, CKT fosters a strong sense of community. These opportunities to connect outside of the office have made my experience all the more fulfilling.

Advice for Future Trainees:

Keep an open mind, what interests you in college may not be where you thrive in practice. The rotation system is a great way to explore different areas and find your niche.

Practical experience is key. Seek internships, take on real-world legal work, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Engage, seek feedback, and embrace every challenge as a learning opportunity.

Looking Ahead:

As I continue my traineeship at CKT, I am excited to keep learning and growing. I feel incredibly fortunate to be part of a firm that not only challenges me professionally but also supports my development at every step.
